Funds for School Signs, Athletic Uniforms, Literacy Programs Come at Crucial Time as schools and athletic programs face deep cuts

September 1, 2010 – Phenix City, Ala. – Representative Lesley Vance (Phenix City) who represents most of Russell County and the Southern portion of Lee County presented a series of grant checks to local schools, foundations and cities for needed expenditures to start the school year off on the right foot.

“I am so glad to be able to deliver these checks to these schools and scholarship funds,” Vance said. “Reading initiatives, city beautification and athletic uniforms all go a long way to helping our students get a leg up, and have pride in their home area of East Alabama.”

The checks include $3500 to Hurtsboro Library and The Planting Seeds Through Reading Program – a program which aides less fortunate children with their fundamental early reading skills — $4,000 for Phenix City Beautification and trash removal, $5000 for Ladonia Elementary School and The ARISE Foundation in Smiths, $7,000 for the new Ridgecrest Elementary School for a lighted sign to make visibility of the school easier, and $10,000 for the Smiths Station High School Football Team to purchase uniforms.

“It is through the generosity and know-how of our local representation like Lesley Vance that we were able to buy new uniforms for our high school football team,” Smiths Coach said. “I don’t know what we would do without a guy like Lesley looking out for us.

On top of the specific checks, Representative Vance also presented the Phenix City School Board with a check for $57,000 to disburse as needed to underfunded programs throughout the school system,

“Today is a great day for East Alabama,” Vance said. “I am just glad the people trust me to represent them, and to help education by directing these funds where they are needed.”
